Children Eating Healthy . . . Things for parents to think about.
Start by setting the stage for pleasant mealtimes.Make it a point to eat as many meals together at home as possible. A regular mealtime gives you and your family a chance to talk and relax together, and helps you and your child to have a positive relationship with food.
- You can start off by cooking the meal together. Children’s cookbooks have lots of clever ideas to make healthy eating fun. Check them out in the links below.
- Think of the family meal table as a conflict-free zone where you each come for positive time together. Save problem-solving and difficult discussions for a separate time and place.
- Save distractions, such as reading, toys, television watching, or answering the phone, for another time and place.
- Teach and model good table manners and respectful behavior.

Children Staying Active . . . Things for parents to think about
Look for ways to make exercise and fitness more fun. Notice whether your child enjoys a certain activity, and if he or she does not, look for other activities. Make activities more fun, perhaps by making them part of family outings, making up games to do along your route, or inviting friends to go along. For example, take a hike and make it into a game by looking for different birds, plants, etc. There are many parks and trails to choose from.
